Almost 10 years ago on the "Up in Smoke" tour, we saw Dr. Dre drinking cognac onstage, and he announced a line of cognac and vodka drinks last year. A few years ago, he did a Coors Light commercial. Now the production legend has moved onto a lighter drink of choice: Dr Pepper.

Dre appears in a new Dr Pepper commercial, in which he takes over things at an outdoor party. The Doc walks in and tells viewers in a voiceover, "Scientific tests prove when you drink Dr Pepper slow, the 23 flavors taste even better. For me, slow always produces a hit." He adds later, "Slower is better — trust me, I'm a doctor."

Dre then makes his way over to the DJ booth, where the guy on the wheels of steel is playing a techno beat that the Compton native doesn't seem to be feeling. Dre politely tells the DJ to "step aside" from the turntables and throws on one of his beats, a track that was made during the Detox recording sessions with co-producers the Buchanans, a rep for the Buchanans told MTV News.

The track used in the commercial leaked onto the Internet in February and was labeled "Topless." A source told MTV news that the song is officially titled "Sh-- Popped Off." The song features T.I. referencing Dre's raps: "It's the D.R. ... Made the West side worldwide, no PR/ Gangsta-rap God, I'm the end-all, be-all/ California love from the Bloods to the C-Dogs."

In March, when asked by MTV News about the song, Tip declined to confirm his work with Dre.

"I heard about that," Tip said coyly about the track, which is expected to appear on Detox. "Did I really reference vocals for Dr. Dre? Did Dr. Dre confirm I referenced vocals for Dr. Dre? I cannot confirm or deny my involvement with the Detox project, but if I had the chance to work with the great Dr. Dre, it would be an honor and a privilege, and definitely be a pivotal moment and highlight of my career."

Meanwhile, Dre continues to work on Detox. 50 Cent and Eminem appeared on BET's "106 and Park" this week and said Dre has completed 10 songs for the project.

Miley Cyrus, riding high on the success of her "Hannah Montana" film and soundtrack, has announced plans for a 45-date North American tour this fall. The tour, which features Metro Station as opening act, kicks off September 14 in Portland, Oregon and wraps up in Miami on December 2.

The tour is the teen star's first since the highly successful "Best of Both Worlds" trek in 2007-2008. That outing grossed $55,245,879 and sold 994,665 tickets to 70 shows reported to Billboard Boxscore. Cyrus was named Breakthrough Artist at the 2008 Billboard Touring Awards. The tour was also notable for drawing attention to issues in the ticketing business,
as Cyrus’ concerts sold out immediately and tickets were quickly available on secondary ticketing sites, drawing the ire of parents and the scrutiny of public officials as to the number of tickets available to the general public and how the tickets end up on the resale market.

Ticketmaster is using the Cyrus tour to rollout its biggest experiment in paperless ticketing yet in an effort to limit ticket scalping. According to a press release, "All tickets will be sold exclusively through paperless ticket delivery which means fans will not receive a physical concert ticket for their entry into the event." Ticket buyers will be required to bring the credit card used making the purchase and a photo ID to the concert venue in order to gain entry. All groups must enter the concerts together, and ushers will issue "seat locator slips." Information about the paperless ticketing for the tour is available at ticketmaster.com/mileycyrus.

The 3D concert film of the tour, "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour," opened with $31 million last year, ending up with $65 million to become the biggest concert movie of all time.

This year's tour is presented by Walmart, which is launching a new apparel line with Cyrus and designer Max Azira in August.

An American Express presale runs from June 10-12, with tickets going on sale to the general public beginning Saturday, June 13th at 10:00 AM local. Ticket prices range from $39.50 – 79.50 plus fees and applicable service charges.

British singer-songwriter Katie Melua has sold more than 10 million albums, mostly in the U.K. and Europe, and even has a Dutch tulip named after her. Breaking the U.S. is also on her agenda, but she doesn't expect to be an overnight success.

"People go, 'Oh, you have to break America!,'" Melua, who's in the midst of a brief North American tour to promote last month's release of her third album, "Pictures" (an October 2008 release overseas), tells Billboard.com. "To me, it's just another place with a bunch of lovely people. Yes, it's bigger and harder to break, but I don't mind a bit of hard work. It's not really any different than taking in anywhere else."

Melua, who's just released a live album recorded at London's O2 Arena, wraps up her North American swing on Friday in Nashville, with an appearance on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" set for Wednesday. She'll be in Europe during July and early August but says she plans to spend most of the rest of the year working on her fourth studio album. It will be her first not produced by and co-written with her manager, Mike Batt, who discovered Melua while she was studying at the BRIT School for the Performing Arts.

"It's exciting and scary because he's been such a huge part of what I've done, and so sort of incredible and nurturing and just inspiring with it all," Melua notes. "I'm kind of going out on my own for the first time. I'm excited but a bit worried, too. But it's time to grow up a little bit and take full responsibility for myself. I suppose you have to take that leap from a bridge once in awhile, don't you, and see if you can fly."

Melua isn't offering up any details about her flight plan, however. "It's too early to talk about it at the moment," she says of the next album. "I just think it feels too soon. I want to get it done before I'm talking about it. I really do believe in doing before talking, so...just watch this space for the time being."

Grammy Award-winning singer Koko Taylor, known worldwide as the "Queen of the Blues," died today (June 3) of complications following surgery, her long time record label Alligator announced on its website. She was 80.

Willie Dixon signed Taylor to Chess Records in 1962, and he produced several singles and two albums for her. Dixon also wrote "Wang Dang Doodle," Taylor's million selling 1965 hit that became her signature song.

Taylor moved to Alligator Records in 1975. Of her nine albums for the label, eight were nominated for Grammy awards. She won a Grammy in 1984 for her guest appearance on the compilation album "Blues Explosion" on Atlantic.

Taylor's last public performance was on May 7 in Memphis at the Blues Music Awards, where she sang "Wang Dang Doodle" after receiving her award for Traditional Blues Female Artist Of The Year.

Talk about a dream come true. Just five months after being granted political asylum in the United States, the Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez won a place on the slate of performers at the 31st annual Playboy Jazz Festival. And that's not all. The jazz/classical enthusiast is also working on his first album with an industry icon: Quincy Jones.

It all started three years when Rodriguez applied to play at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The Cuban government approved his application, and Rodriguez was later asked to play at festival founder Claude Nobs' house, where he presented an arrangement of Cole Porter's "I Love You." Among the guests that night was Jones.

"I was completely blown away," recalled Rodriguez, who speaks some English but also uses an interpreter.

Upon returning to the United States, Jones stayed in contact with Rodriguez through the former's production company. Seizing the chance to pursue his craft stateside, Rodriguez defected while in Mexico doing a show with his father, a well-known singer in Cuba with the same name. Making his way to the Texas border, Rodriguez officially entered the States on January 15.

Born in Havana, the 23-year-old Rodriguez began playing the piano at age 7. With musical influences ranging from Bach and Beethoven to mentor Jones and Thelonious Monk, Rodriguez later honed his skills as a producer and musical director. He has collaborated with a host of Cuban artists including Gaston Joya, Michael Olivera, musicians in the Buena Vista Social Club and his father.

"This kid is something else," said Jones, who chose the pianist to play as part of his keynote speech at this year's South by Southwest music conference. "He has perfect pitch, composes, arranges and practices 12 hours a day. He never stops."

Now based in Los Angeles, Rodriguez will appear June 14 at the Playboy festival at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, joined by Nathan East on bass and fellow Cuban Francisco Mela on drums. Between recording and negotiating a label deal for his debut album, Rodriguez is slated to perform at other jazz festivals this summer, including Monterey and Newport.

"The U.S. is one of the biggest melting music pots in the world," he said. "I'm looking forward to playing with some of this country's incredible musicians."

Atlantic has announced that it will relaunch the Elektra Records imprint, which has been dormant since 2004. The label will be run by Fueled By Ramen founder John Janick and Atlantic EVP of A&R Mike Caren.

While the new presidents say they are planning on signing new artists, the first three artists to join the label all have established relationships with Atlantic. The first album released on Elektra was the soundtrack for the HBO show "True Blood," which dropped on May 19. The company's next release will be the U.S. debut of U.K. dance artist Little Boots, whose EP "Illuminations" is scheduled for release on June 9.

Elektra has also signed French electronic duo Justice, and rapper Cee-Lo. Caren says a new Cee-Lo album will be out in the either the fourth quarter of this year, or first quarter next year. Justice will release a new album in early 2010.

Janick and Caren say they were approached by Atlantic co-chairs and COO's Julie Greenwald and Craig Kallman to head up the imprint.

"When Elektra merged with Atlantic five years ago, we always knew the right moment would come to bring it back to life," said Kallman and Greenwald. "The great news is that we have found the perfect people to do it. John and Mike are two of the most passionate, creative, forward-thinking young executives in our business. They both started their careers as teenagers and have gone on to champion some of the most exciting new music of the last decade. The independent, entrepreneurial spirit that long defined Elektra is in great hands, and we are truly thrilled to see the label take flight once again."

Janick also suggests the approaching 60th anniversary of the launch of Elektra as another reason for the relaunch of the imprint.

"We are planning on building an eclectic brand," Janick says. "We're looking for artists with potential. We're not an incubator label; we're going to develop artists and get them to the next level."

He adds that he will continue to run Fueled By Ramen and extend the 360 model they have used to Elektra, noting that Little Boots is a 360 artist.

Sometimes it's just easy for producers Sean C. and LV, a.k.a. Grind Music Inc. — play the beat, let the artist rap over it, done. Classic.

"We had that Michael Jackson sample. L went up there to Yonkers and played them the beat," Sean C. said of Jadakiss' new street jam, "One More Step." "It's pretty simple, straightforward."

"Soon as he heard it," LV added. "I played, like, 20 seconds and he was like, 'I already know what that is. Don't even worry about that.' "

"It was a blessing they got it on some 'We Gon Make It'-type vibe," C., a former A&R rep at Loud Records, added.

Sean C. and LV have incredible credentials and have worked with the best of the best.

"This is a plaque I got for Reasonable [Doubt]," Sean said, holding up his reminder from his early work with Jay-Z. C. co-produced "Can't Knock the Hustle."

It was on Jay-Z's last album that the two friends — who grew up in the same neighborhood but didn't start working together until 2002 — proved themselves as one of hip-hop's most viable production teams. Working with Diddy, they handled six songs off 2007's American Gangster, including the sonically combustible theme "Roc Boys."

After that, the phone rang off the hook. The two did work on Busta Rhymes' "Don't Touch Me," Ghostface's "Barrel Brothers" and Fat Joe's "I Won't Tell," among others.

"We wanna just keep putting good music out," said L, who came up as Big Pun's DJ. "You just wanna stay relevant and stay hot. So that's what we got to prove to ourselves. We know we could do it. You always talk about, 'I'm nice, I'm nice' — now it's time to show it. Anything you need, come down. It's like Home Depot — Beat Depot."

"It works different ways for different joints," Sean C. said about how the two work in the lab. "It might be a day when L would have an ill sample, then he'll start f---ing with it and I might find some drums for it ... or a vocal sample to go on top of it. We just make good music. That's what it's about."

"Every beat is different," L insisted. "We just do it."

On Ghostface Killah: "We cooking that up right now. The last three Ghost albums we been on. The last one we had five [tracks]. ... The chemistry with Ghost is very good. It's mostly an automatic thing. He'll have a beat CD for a minute and when he's ready, he's like, 'I want this one this one and this one.' It just happens." - Sean C.

On Clipse: "We got three on [their next album]. I'm exited about that. They spit your head off. It's hard, straightforward, aggressive. They do what they do." - Sean C.

"The beats don't sound like us. One of them does, but the others don't." - LV

On Slaughterhouse: "We're really in the beginning stages of it. We're trying to scope a sound for Slaughter House so it's their sound, not somebody else's. We're sending them joints, they got a bunch of joints they picked." - Sean C.

On Wale: "I think he sounds real good. I definitely like the record we did. I like the Cool & Dre record. We went in a few times with him. The joint we did got Travis Barker on the drums. Wale got that done while he was is in L.A. The beat was done, then Travis played over it, then we played on top of what Travis did." - LV

"It's called 'OG.' He's talking about how OGs schooled him to the game and how they was when they were young and how he listens to them. It's not a street OG thing, but he touches on how things were different at that time." - Sean C.

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From the Underground

Recently on BET's "106 & Park," 50 Cent spoke on how he, Eminem and Dr. Dre are probably the most powerful crew of artists in the music business today. Dre's a legend, Eminem is rolling — his Relapse went #1 last week — and Fif has been very successful as well. But since 50 and Em are so tight, will we ever see the two of them make an entire LP together? DJ Whoo Kid says the project has been talked about, but he isn't holding his breath waiting for it to happen.

"They been talking about that sh-- for years," Whoo Kid said. "We even talked about it in the mixtape format. It's an incredible situation [that] I hope one day goes down. Who wouldn't want to see that? I don't know what they gonna call that. I remember Em joked about that, 'Let's call it Ebony and Ivory.' Society is gonna have to force these guys to do it ... the scheduling, Em's album, 50's album — it's all scheduling. We've talked about it the last three, four years. You would want to see it, right?"

Of course — just like we would love to see the Jay-Z and Nas album, the Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre album or even that T-Wayne LP. But, like Whoo Kid, we'll believe it when we see it.

"I don't think Em and 50 will ever get it together to do an album," journalist Elliott Wilson said. "I know there was talk of [a joint album] when 50 first blew up and it was gonna be called Black and White. I personally love that title," the founder and CEO of RapRadar.com continued. "I'm sure there are plenty of unreleased records they've done and some kinda compilation could be released one day. But as far as a full-fledged album recorded together, that's doubtful. Then again, this is hip-hop, so what the f--- do we know?"

DJ Whoo Kid added that when 50 and Em are in the studio, they bring out the best in each other.

"The element of Dre being there, too, brings their bars up," Whoo Kid said. "They're both excited, crazy. They're already excited with each other. You see the verses are way up there, the creativity is way up there. 50 is influenced by [Em's] creativity where he crosses the line. The only time you see 50 buggin' out is when they're together. Whereas when 50's solo, he's creative too, but into the gangsta world, the thug sh--. Em showed him there's other lines out there you can f--- with.

"In the beginning it was business," he continued about 50 and Em's relationship. "They naturally grew into a family-type bond. 50 hangs more with Eminem and he's more connected with Eminem than Dre. Not to say 50 and Dre don't get along — they're really cool, they're friends and everything, but it's mostly business. But 50's gonna go to Eminem's wedding, 50's gonna go to Eminem's barbecue, they're gonna go on vacation together. They're more into the family sh--."

"Although I've never been around Eminem and 50 together," Wilson told us, "I believe that their friendship is built on loyalty and trust. I think 50 is Em's biggest fan and supporter who always shows his appreciation to Marshall for enabling him to build an incredible life. He doesn't even know how to not show that gratitude. And 50's probably one of the few people in this world Em can truly confide in."

Miley Cyrus heated up the MTV Movie Awards red carpet last Sunday in a beige Moschino dress, and now she's hooking up with designer Max Azria (of BCBG and Hervé Léger) to start her own clothing line.

The line, called Miley Cyrus & Max Azria, will hit Wal-Mart, where her good friend Taylor Swift has a clothing line, this August. Everything in the collection, which will include tops, pants, graphic T-shirts, shoes and accessories, is inspired by Miley's own personal style and will be priced under $20.

"I love creating looks that are all about personal expression and individuality," Cyrus said in a statement. "Collaborating with Max Azria has been an amazing experience, and I'm really excited about launching this line with Wal-Mart. There's even more to come!"

She later took to Twitter to announce the news. "In August my clothing line with MAX AZRIA (bcbg) is coming out in walmart!!! it's soooo cute! very rocker and hey who doesn't want a great deal!!!" she wrote. "i love u guys! I'm so exited to share this wit u."

But Miley's clothing line wasn't her only big announcement. This summer she'll be hitting the road for a tour with her brother's band, Metro Station. "I can't wait to see y'all there! go to mileycyrus.com or ticketmaster.com!!! yayy :) we are selling tickets the REAL way!!!"

The tour kicks off September 14 in Portland, Oregon, and will hit 45 cities before wrapping up in Miami on December 2. Tickets go on sale June 13 and are being offered at $40-$80.
